Votre bébé cette semaine
Your baby is about the size of a lemon, measuring around 3.4 inches and weighing about 1.5 ounces. Baby can now make facial expressions — squinting, frowning, and even grimacing — as facial muscles develop and the brain sends signals. A fine, downy hair called lanugo is covering the entire body to help regulate temperature and protect that delicate skin. The roof of the mouth (palate) has fully formed, and baby is actively swallowing amniotic fluid and producing urine. The liver is beginning to produce bile, and the spleen is starting to help produce red blood cells.
Ce que vous pouvez ressentir
Your appetite is likely increasing as nausea fades, and you may find yourself craving specific foods. Many women experience the famous "pregnancy glow" — rosier cheeks and shinier hair due to increased blood flow and hormonal changes. Your breasts may be less tender than in the first trimester, though they continue to grow and change. The round ligament that supports your uterus is stretching, which can cause occasional sharp pains in the lower abdomen when you move quickly. You might also notice increased energy and a generally improved mood compared to the first trimester.
Symptômes courants
- The "pregnancy glow" may appear as blood flow to the skin increases.
- Your appetite is stronger — second trimester is often called the honeymoon phase.
- Mild headaches can occur due to hormonal shifts and increased blood volume.
Conseils de la semaine
Focus on nutrient-dense snacking to satisfy your increased appetite — nuts and seeds for healthy fats and protein, fresh fruit for vitamins, and Greek yogurt for calcium and probiotics. Iron needs increase significantly during pregnancy, so incorporate iron-rich foods like lean red meat, spinach, lentils, and fortified cereals. Pair iron-rich foods with vitamin C sources (like citrus fruits or bell peppers) to boost absorption. Stay mindful of weight gain — the recommended total is 25-35 pounds for women with a normal pre-pregnancy BMI, with most gain occurring in the second and third trimesters.
Bien manger
- Enjoy lean proteins like grilled chicken, fish, and legumes at every meal.
- Snack on trail mix with almonds, dried cranberries, and dark chocolate chips.
- Eat fiber-rich vegetables like broccoli, carrots, and Brussels sprouts.
Point nutrition
- Calcium (1,000 mg/day) is critical — your baby's bones are hardening.
- Vitamin K (90 mcg/day) supports healthy blood clotting — found in leafy greens.
Bien-être au quotidien
- Swimming, prenatal yoga, and stationary cycling are ideal exercises right now.
- Start sleeping on your side — it improves blood flow to the placenta.
- Plan a babymoon trip during weeks 14–28 while you feel your best.
Pour votre partenaire
Stock the fridge and pantry with healthy snacks she enjoys — having nutritious options readily available makes a big difference when cravings hit. Learn about her food cravings and aversions, and be flexible about meal planning. If she's craving something specific at odd hours, try to be the one who makes the run. This is also a good time to start attending prenatal appointments with her when possible — hearing the baby's heartbeat on the Doppler is an incredible bonding experience for both of you.
Signes à signaler à votre professionnel de santé
- Headaches lasting days with vision changes could indicate blood pressure issues.
- Sudden facial or hand swelling may be an early sign of preeclampsia.
- Vaginal bleeding in the second trimester always warrants a call to your doctor.
