Votre bébé cette semaine
Baby is about the size of a lime, roughly 2.1 inches long and weighing about half an ounce. Reflexes are kicking in — your little one can now curl toes, clench eye muscles, and make sucking movements with that tiny mouth. The kidneys are beginning to produce urine, and the intestines are moving from the umbilical cord into the abdominal cavity where they belong. The bone marrow is starting to produce white blood cells, giving baby's immune system its earliest foundations. The pituitary gland at the base of the brain is beginning to produce hormones.
Ce que vous pouvez ressentir
Your uterus is now rising above the pelvic bone, and your healthcare provider can feel the top of it (the fundus) during an abdominal exam. The wonderful milestone this week is that the risk of miscarriage drops significantly — to about 2-3% — providing much-needed peace of mind. You may notice a dark vertical line (linea nigra) forming on your abdomen, caused by increased melanin production. Dizziness can occur as your cardiovascular system adjusts to increased blood volume. Headaches may become more frequent due to hormonal fluctuations and changes in blood circulation.
Symptômes courants
- Nausea often improves significantly — the end of the first trimester is near.
- A small baby bump may become visible, especially in second pregnancies.
- Skin changes like darkening of the nipples and a faint linea nigra may appear.
- Occasional dizziness from lower blood pressure is normal.
Conseils de la semaine
Many parents choose to share their pregnancy news after this milestone week, as the risk of complications has decreased substantially. If you haven't had your first prenatal visit yet, schedule it now — your provider will want to check blood type, Rh factor, and screen for infections. Consider starting to document your bump with weekly photos; you'll love looking back at them later. This is also a great time to start researching your birthing options — hospital, birthing center, or home birth — and the various providers available in your area.
Bien manger
- Resume a well-rounded diet — include all food groups as appetite returns.
- Try salmon or sardines twice a week for omega-3s and vitamin D.
- Eat dark chocolate (in moderation) for magnesium and antioxidants.
Point nutrition
- Switch to a second-trimester prenatal if recommended — higher iron may be needed.
- Ensure 600 IU vitamin D daily, especially if you have limited sun exposure.
Bien-être au quotidien
- Many couples announce the pregnancy after the 12-week milestone.
- Continue regular exercise — your risk of miscarriage drops significantly now.
- Book your next prenatal appointment and any genetic screening tests.
Pour votre partenaire
If she's ready to share the news, help plan a creative and memorable way to tell family and friends — whether that's a special dinner, a photo announcement, or a video call with grandparents-to-be. Take the lead on organizing the logistics so she can focus on enjoying the moment. Start thinking about your budget and any financial adjustments you'll want to make before baby arrives. This is also a good time to review your health insurance coverage for prenatal care, delivery, and adding a dependent.
Signes à signaler à votre professionnel de santé
- Sudden heavy bleeding at this stage needs urgent medical evaluation.
- Severe itching all over your body could indicate a liver condition — tell your doctor.
